It was a rather small device, a quartz crystal induced to vibrate by an electric current, this was connected to some sort of interface where you could ask how many vibrations you desire, after which the camera took a picture.
I don't see these on today's smartphones, they must've been a legend. My ancestor who held this information called it 'a timer'
