Can mitochondria get cancer?

They have their own dna and the theory is they at one point were separate organisms apart from the cell. I'm thinking of this because of the recent yeast research that says yeast cells either age because of nucleus dna or mitochondrial problems.

Mitochondrial mutations are a common incidence in many cancers and often serve to aid the cancer. My guess is that, since this is not usually the only type of cellular mutation present, it does not get its own "class" of cancer. It's usually existing with many other mutations.

Mitochondria are cell organelles, not cells.

I'm pretty sure cancer is restricted to multicellular organisms. Cancer causes cells to reproduce abnormally fast, producing a tumor (lump of cancerous cells). This causes problems for the rest of an organism's body. Even if you consider a mitochondrion as an individual organism, it is still a single-celled organism. Thus, I don't think mitochondria can get cancer.

Single-celled organisms cannot get cancer, though. Cancer is a malignant disruption in cell cycle signalling leading to dysfunctional overgrowth (neoplasia) and if you have a bunch of single celled organisms that grow wildly we call that a bacterial colony.

The bigger question is why hasn't the mitochondria's DNA integrated fully into the nucleus' genome? Evolutionarily speaking there doesn't appear to be a reason why it hasn't.

It's working fine enough as it is, and that's the best it needs to be. Evolution is survival of the good enough as they say. Some organisms though do have fully internalized thei mDNA.

MB in the next eon mitochondria will get their genome fully incorporated into the nucleus.
Still, there are quite a few mutations that need to take place. For example, mitochondrial genome has a slightly different triplet code for AAs. It actually is quite fascinating any mito genes found their way to the nucleus.

if your question is more like "what's stopping mitochondria from just segregating over and over again", that's interesting to think about. the continued existence of the mitochondria is dependent on signals, proteins, and energy from outside of the cells. that means that even if a mitochondria could keep dividing like a cell over and over again so much that it breaks out of the cell, it would still die. it would be a huge evolutionary leap for mitochondria to sort of "evolve back out" of cells such that they're self-sustaining replicating
