What degree for quantum computing?

Hey /sci/ I'm getting out of the military soon and that means free college, I'm really interested in quantum computers specifically the physics and hardware aspect of them. What would be the best physics or engineering degree to eventually work on quantum computers?

You can literally start in any of the following
>math
>physics
>electrical engineering
>CS (non meme)
and get in from there. If you're interested in hardware, you might want to do EE with a focus on quantum optics. Physics should be fine too. If you want to do theory, physics, math, or CS is fine.
Ultimately you're going to have to learn a lot from all of these fields (at least as motivation) to do any actual work on quantum after undergrad

I'd say electrical engineering or computer engineering. Physics is great don't get me wrong (you likely have more opportunities to learn math with a physics degree which is important because math is the underlying language for all this) but if you decide not to go to grad achool, which is reasonable (I'm in a PhD program atm and don't really like it), then the EE or CE degree will be much more valuable.

I'm biased but get a degree in EE. You'll definitely need a PhD. While you're there, work with a professor who deals in microfabrication. It's a lot of physics and it's not easy. Make sure you publish a papers in your field

I've never seen non-physicists work on quantum hardware.. But I also haven't seen everything. The problem with studying physics for this goal is that yes, you will learn everything you need, but you'll also learn a whole lot else you won't need at all.
Perhaps nano engineering is a good compromise.

Math is the best if you want to jump into theory. Physics and engineering are equally good if you want to jump into QC component research. Imo you should do either math + CS or math + physics double majors.
You’re at the biggest disadvantage with a CS undergrad background alone, but on the other hand, MIP* = RE was the biggest theoretical result in a long time, solved open problems in both physics and pure math, and came out of a team of CS PhD’s.

This isn’t to suggest CS profs don’t have regular results relevant in quantum. Vazirani and Vidick in particular have contributed to physics results from the CS departments, but the issue is that if you do CS alone in undergrad, it takes a while to catch up.
