I genuinely enjoy using solidworks and would have loved to kept working as a Designer/Drafter but unfortunately the pay was shit and the work quickly lost any sort of challenge.
Hopefully when I finish my engineering degree I'll be able to come back to it.

Also, whats giving you trouble with it?
In parts and assemblies there are a lot things you can do that will slow the program down to an absolute crawl, many of which are avoidable.

Do you think it is because you don't have enough RAM or you just lack the processing power?
Idk if it supports parallel processing or GPU.
What tasks seem to make it slow?

They're all based on 30yo Fortran code and nobody wants to rebase or write something good from scratch. If you're in research you should use open source software or write your own programs (based on open libraries) anyway.
