For me, personally, I go through a process of recording my lecture with an audio device so I can listen to the lecture over again later, take in class notes, take text book notes, review both notes and maybe the lecture.
After that, I make note cards with information that's written in my own words and diagrams catalog those note cards like pic related into a box for later recall as a added bonus for understanding.
I take what I understand and make notes with my own words and reference note cards that support ideas or concepts. It's not the fastest way, but in my opinion if you make a habit out of it's well worth it in the long run.
This method only works if you stay on top of your work, because if you fall behind, it becomes harder to do.
