Fish eggs stuck to the webbed feet of migratory birds, fish eggs frozen in glacial ice which hatch into the lake formed when the ice thaws. Humans purposefully moving fish eggs from a river to the lake with the hope of easily catching fish later since they can't escape and food would be more scarce than the river.

Not an expert but I would surmise that they would have had a continuous river/stream system that they could have used to enter high elevation lakes in the past, before erosion created waterfalls and cut them off from low elevations permanently.
