It's already happening. There's a lag of some time between infections and deaths, obviously, and we're approaching the end of that lag in many states, particularly Texas and California (which reported record high deaths in the last few days). Deaths will rise further in the coming weeks as states where the second spike in cases started later. If the weekly running average death count drops within the next month, I'll happily admit that I was wrong. But quite sadly, it won't drop, it will go up.

What did I say about science? This disease isn’t going away and no one is pretending it can. Countries like Japan and Korea are still getting new cases. Yes they’re getting less new cases, but unless the expectation is that we practice social distancing forever now, ultimately this will always be a problem.

We’ve been told from the very beginning this is all about flattening the curve to maintain reasonableness for the hospitals. A vast vast vast majority of cases do not require hospitalization so we’re essentially shutting down the entire world economy for no reason

The point is that the aggregate is misleading because there are separate areas that are getting hit at separate times.

An aggregate like this is sufficient to demonstrate that the curve is most certainly not flat, despite what you neckbeards might claim.

As it would happen, the most of the non flattening is because of Texas, Florida, and California which are seemingly receiving it later. They have large enough populations to bump the graph up (nearly the entire second peak is these three states), but it's unfair to say the curve is not flattening when it's an entirely different curve at this point. It is not descriptive of any areas that are not those three states which is the majority of the country.

This is a false dichotomy because a) extinction of the virus is a possibility when a vaccine arrives, most likely early next year, and b) previous pandemics indicate that the economy recovers more quickly following strict and early intervention. The trade-off between public health and health of the economy is not nearly as clear cut as you make it out to be, and if anything, the data indicate that these two go hand in hand rather than compete. An economy cannot thrive without a healthy population, and fear in the population will drive down consumer spending even if no restrictions are in place.

I agree that one needs to be considerate of the potential economic consequences of an intervention, but pretending like this virus doesn't require any intervention or that any intervention will damage the economy is just about the most stupid thing you could do. Economic fallout is largely a consequence of the pandemic itself rather than a consequence of measures that contain said pandemic.

This isn't true at all, as I've already pointed out. Some measures go farther than was was done in the past, some do not. States also differ in their policy, and many have lifted stricter measures that were in place.
