Why are molecules represented like this? Is this just a made up representation of water molecules?

It just feels weird presenting these floating structures to people with wide spaces between them and saying "You see this? This is water!"

What about the carbon molecules of our cells, do they also have these wide spaces between them?

The concept of molecules should be more known.
