How much of chemistry can be studied without having access to a lab?

I want to understand the chemicals in my everyday life and what one can or shouldn't do with them. Is this something a non-chemist can learn? And if so, do you have book recommendations?

Most intro chem books won't steer you won't but I used Atkins.

A lot of starting chemistry can be learned from a book and the reactions/tests are easy enough to replicate. There are apps that have virtual chemistry labs if you don't want to buy the equipment

But for everyday, intro chem+some ochem should be enough

I recommend nanshing glassware and GRNtec chemicals. But sketchy Chinese suppliers work too. Just get a distillation apparatus, a water pump, vacuum funnel kit, beaker and flask set, garduated cylinders and go watch YouTube tutorials on how to make X. You'll learn a lot.

Some personal starting experiments are, make nitric acid, make benzocaine, make isoamyl acetate (banana smell), aniline, aniline dye, Grignard reagent methyl violet, and if you're feeling crazy maybe a few mg of nitroglycerin.

I don't have any recommendations as far as literature is concerned, but learning some organic chemistry sounds like the kind of thing you'd want.
Keep in mind that chemistry is overwhelmingly useless without labwork.

Nah, without going into detail. I have a nice set up and never had any flak at all. I used to have to cross the border with my chemicals to get them into my country and still wasn't bothered by customs beyond some funny looks.

Just stay away from anything on the narcotics scheduled precursors (somewhat problematic as basics like iodine can be controlled, but ordering a few grams of that has not posed a problem for me either) Worst case scenario, the cops show up to your house, if you're not black or a meth head just tell them you're more than willing to explain what you're doing (outside of your home, so they do not tear it apart) and don't actually make or posses any drugs. Remember, people legit buy drugs online all the time now, kilos of fentanyl go through the mail as do LSD substitutes, the days of chasing after a kid who bought a hundred grams of sodium nitrite are long gone.

If you decide you want to get serious, open a company under your name and get a corporate address somewhere, call it "something something biotech" and you'll be A-OK for every place except maybe Sigma Aldrich.
