I'm seeing an arguement take place on Twitter.
One is believing the virus is fake. Hes also an anti vaxxer and flat earther. He believes space is fake. He refuse to wear masks and calls the "mask wearers" insane. I want someone to knock some sense into him.

When scientists tell people race isn't real and strip nobels from people for observing that racial differences are heavily genetic, you can't also expect those people to be credulous about other things scientists tell them.
These people have also been exposed to people telling them the poles were going to be entirely melted by now and that New York would become an iced over disaster zone at any minute, by "science" propagandists.

That's what happens when science is politicised to attack entire groups of people (for example, conservatives, whites and Christians). They'll clam up and start just believing the opposite of what scientists tell them. That'll be their new method of coming to a decision about what to believe.
And if something like mask wearing is politicised into a reddit issue where people signal about how white people are trash or whatever, there'll be a certain number of people who just go the opposite direction.
If people also get lied to by the state and other institutions in general, they'll just stop believing all of it. Why would anyone, for example, believe the CIA or the USG about almost anything now?
Would you believe a humanities professor about any potentially politically loaded issue?

I'd do my own research.
Some people suck at that. Or have other, conflicting belief systems, like Christianity, that compel them toward believing things like a flat and young earth. And seek refuge in these belief systems and networks because they're alienated from the dominant ones.
Part of it is also these people status seeking by flipping the hierarchy to make them truth seekers and tellers at the top, as compared to the deceitful scientists and institutionally empowered people (motherfuckers who are lying and getting me pissed).

I'm the person they replied to, and I wonder if they got the impression that I'm somehow "denying" (fucking religious terminology in science - yikes) global warming or something (fwiw, I haven't looked into the issue much but I broadly accept the scientific consensus). Or promoting some kind of idea of races as being "pure" rather than mixes of different streams of genetics that are partially defined due to our particular time in history. Or that I'm saying COVID isn't real or something.
Basically I wonder if they're so swamped in partisan politics and their own particular progressive religion that they can't process me as only being somewhat heretical. You're either all heretic or not heretic. There's no "fine people on both sides". That sort of thing.

Afaict, I made the mistake of thinking Watson had his Nobel stripped, when he actually was memed by the Guardian as having his scientific honours stripped.
(Which is itself media politicisation of science, and details actual politicisation of science by the people who did strip him of honours.)
