Hello sci people i have a simple question how likely is it we’ll get a vaccine this year I couldn’t find any info on the progress being made for a vaccine so I just want your opinion on it

AIDS have been around since the 1980s at least. Billions have been poured into research for a vaccine and yet it hasn't happened.
Obviously this particular coronavirus isn't the same things as HIV but the point is just because a lot of resources are poured into finding a vaccine doesn't mean it is going to happen.
My guess is we never have an effective vaccine but instead end up with treatments for the symptoms which are better than the current lung popping treatments. Hopefully over time it ends up mutating enough that the symptoms are mild in all but the rarest cases.

Comparing this to aids is a bad take. HIV has a monstrous mutation rate, iirc in my evolution class we calculated that it takes less than a month for every single point mutation on the genome of a single hypothetical AIDS patient to be accessed. This is why we had to use a lot of combinatorial treatments as it would just mutated to resist whatever single drug we used. This is also what makes it fucking impossible to make a stable vaccine for because it keeps changing the surface receptors.

Coronavirus on the other hand just has a low rate of antibody retention. With booster shots it's still tenable as it's mutation rate is low. But if we get a couple more strains before a vaccine we are well and truly fucked

Except we have what is essentially a cure for AIDs with current generation medicine. Just not a vaccine, because of the problems I stated in the previous post.

I was pointing out that pouring money into making a vaccine for a disease that has a completely different set of biological issues that make it intractable is not the same as pouring it into a more "mundane" virus with less difficult problems for creating a vaccine.

But I'm glad you can completely discount how differences in viral charecteristics change whether it's easier to make a cure or a treatment. Call me smart again though, I didn't get enough love as a child so I crave it. Especially when it's insulting.
