Why did they have to make this mess so fucking convoluted they even had to put sin cos and tan as a single button in the calculator because they know its a fucking pain in the ass.

It's just a unit circle. You have a handful of triangle identities that you scale down to fit inside the circle. Then you just kind of guess the other 'projected' positions around the unit circle.

I agree it's positively trash and you should google 'Rational Trigonometry' and then watch all the youtube lectures, you will be "Wait what, why did nobody teach me this it's so simple" but sadly you need those trash cos/sin functions.

C'mon man, there's like 3 things to remember for any (a,b) real numbers:

1 = cos(a)^2 + sin(a)^2
cos(a+b) = cos(a)*cos(b) - sin(a)*sin(b)
sin(a+b) = sin(a)*cos(b) + sin(b)*cos(a)

then you find all the other stuff using these, if you don't want to use complex conversion back and forth.
As for the specific values, remember the first quarter then think about the circle to know where the other values are situated.

one thing I didn't really think about enough with the unit circle is it's just three right triangles, the 45-45-90, the 30-60-90, and the degenerate case (0-90-90 if you like)
once you understand this all the values on the circle are just a matter of orienting these triangles.
how do you analyze the 30-60-90? just split an equilateral triangle in two, and use the pythagorean theorem to find the length of the long leg.

maybe this is all obvious to you but looking back at my trig course there was this kind of abstraction and disconnect to the underlying geometry that confused me

There are two special right triangles: the right isosceles triangle and the 30-60-90 triangle. I realized this independently circa age 15 just before we started actually learning basic trig. The point is that they are the simple(est) objects to do trig with, to give a sense of the various functions imposed on the notion.

You're not meant to memorize that shit. You're only meant to say to yourself, "Okay so that shit be like one of dem triangles when u flip it dat way what equation do."

Call me a dumbass, but I think that using Tau instead of 2*Pi doesn't solve the problem of using an greek letter to express a particular non-natural.
That's like if you told me to not use e^i but instead use d = e^i.
Moreover, Pi can be found by comparing by comparing a circle's diametre and perimeter, which was easier than using its radius for someone living in Ancient Greece. Think about it, if Tau was easier to get, they'd have found it before, no?

I don't know, a full turn and 2 halves make as much sens to me...
Personally I used degrees in my head (easier to divide a turn, useless for physics and stuff) until I got used to pi-radians in calculus. If tau-radians help people remember better then good for them. The only downside is misundertandings that may happen if the majority doesn't use tau, but that's not really an issue.

Different American here. In my experience I learned trig at around 16/17 years. Some intro calculus the year after; this seemed to be a norm (the distribution of student pacing through highschool math seemed 2.5-modal). This boot camp is likely some sort of remedial program (read: lightly attended) or possibly supplementary material for precocious or curious students.
