/sci/, What are some sciences and technologies that evolved out of food preparation and were made from the same ingredients as food?

I wrote a survival story a while back where the first half of it was basically invention porn focused around the character trying to develop a reliable food source from the resources available. I want to write a sequel to it, but in order to recapture the magic of it I'm going to need something new for the main character to invent. Medicine was one idea, but because it's kind of hard to write about the main character learning medicine through trial and error without butchering the supporting cast, I'm looking for options that wouldn't.
