It's happening, apparently. The satellite was built by gulfies themselves and it'll reach Mars orbit on feb-2021.

Well, with or without external help, now they know more or less how to do some stuff, so that'll help them in future missions.

The Iranian space program is decent, if they could join forces things would be even better, but naturally they probably reject each other.

It was originally announced right when there was a huge amount of press surrounding the Indian mission, which was on its way to Mars at the time. It is literally a publicity stunt and yet another vain attempt to buy legitimacy. It was not proposed by scientists or engineers, the ruler just decided they were going to do it.

Oh yeah they really learned a lot when they weren't allowed to touch basically anything scientific and aren't allowed to see any of the technical information or build the instruments on this project whatsoever right? They've never been left alone with it. It all falls under ITAR and EAR.

Mission is fully EAR classified, and there's a license in place. Yeah, we had to basically put a DC lawfirm on retainer to keep us on the straight and narrow and avoid having the department of commerce from breathing down our necks and have mandatory annual EAR/ITAR training, but we actually made it work. The ITAR reforms from just before the mission was conceived really helped by re-classifying a lot of stuff as EAR, but there were still a lot of grey areas to navigate.

tldr, Emeratis actually did put most of that spacecraft together.

Except if you'd been around those people you'd know what their thoughts on EMM and the emirati team of engineers are. Free satellite and climate data on mars is a good deal for playing nice, but the preconceptions you mention is exactly what im insinuating.

Not sure exactly sure what you're getting at; if you want to criticize political spin and agendas, go right ahead, I won't argue. But I do know that the Emeratis who were directly involved and put blood, sweat, and tears into this are totally honest about everyone's role, and have come so far in such a short amount of time. You're putting words in my mouth. LASP/ASU/SSL absolutely led technical development for both spacecraft and instruments, I never said otherwise. That was the whole point of the collaboration. It's just that everyone's portraying it as copying the answers, when the reality is that it's more like tutoring in a subject you're weak on.

And yeah, some people were a bit miffed, particularly early on, when it seemed like the US part of the team wasn't getting sufficient credit. I think things are a lot better now, though not perfect. A big part of that is the grandstanding aspects of the Middle Eastern culture.

Then why claim they put most of it together? There are many things that were kept away from their eyes as far as engineering too. From what I've seen the grandstanding is the central aspect of their role, which I think is why as you say the us team is miffed. The motivator is money and the difficulty of getting a country to essentially fund multiple mission proposals and engineering with how competitive long term satellite instrument proposals are. That's great for space science in itself but it's a grin and bear it situation from my perspective.

Cope, this kind of stuff happens all the time, albeit countries like the US, UK, France are better positioned to do it. Some countries are very quiet about their projects. For example, Chinas's far-side moon landing last year, that didn't even make the news in China.
