Is it technically possible (if there were funding) to selectively breed modern elk (C. canadensis) to be as large as Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus)? What would have to happen and how would we go about this? How long would it take?
We could monitor the progress and select land that optimizes the carrying capacity for their size. How large of a population would we have to start with? 100 females? 500 females? Can a geneticist weight in??
Aside from that, let this serve as a thread to discuss Pleistocene megafauna.
You don't know what I would give just to see giant cervids grazing in fern-speckled forests, or woolly rhinos battling for mates on the mammoth steppe.
