The middle east civillizations were superior to the rest of the world, the west included, and the west assimillated most of their mathematical and scientific achievements (with a western name in many cases, so that their ignorant offsprings would simply assume they invented it first, though).
But the tipping point was the scientific methods as we know it, and the west successfully proliferated it first.
