In regards to your original question, aspartame is a dipeptide, or two "natural" amino acids put together. Some people cannot metabolize phenylalanine, 1 of 2 amino acids in the dipeptide and it builds up in their system causing mild ailments. People interpret this as "synthetic chemical bad" and blog about it. The ignorant and impressionable read this and perpetuate fear and stupidity.
Diet coke is not bad. Regular coke with regular sugar is arguably worse for overall health. Yes, there may be some adaptations that may cause your body to think you're eating sugar and thus initiating a troublesome biochemical cascade that may make you crave sweets.
