I applied 8 places, got into 2, took forever to hear from them, turns out I shouldn't have applied to one of them, so only one actual choice of program. I had applied to 7, but 8 sounded like a good number. That last place I applied on a whim was where I ended up going.

I was rejected by 38/40 of the phd positions I applied for. I rejected the 2 that accepted me. Now I work as a scientist at the top research institute in my field.
