Particularly in the united states, but also globally, education is in need of good, honest, hard working people. There are some issues with the system, but at the end of the day if there are good people in the field, it can only improve.
The reality of being a teacher is that some of the best work you can do for the kids (and by extension society) is simply being a good role model. Kids, and people in general, need good role models now more than ever. So many kids have parents that are not adequate role models, and it is because of these kids (the same you have identified in your post) that teachers are some of the most important cogs in society, both for the education they provide, and the role models they can be to the lost and the misguided youth.
