From what I've seen people successfully use it in many different cases, some even for their professional work. The Youtuber black beard Project to name an example uses this technology when casting metal.

We use them for rapid prototyping at my engineering company. The final products are injection molded but it takes a lot of time and money to get a factory producing those.

The home ones were a meme. Most people bought them to be part of the hyped "Maker movement", printed a few stock models, then got bored and didn't do anything else. Most people aren't artists and inventors who would have a use for 3D printing, and those who are can usually do wood and metal work already.

I don't use it a lot but it was nice a couple of weeks ago when I swapped out the single DIN radio in my truck for a double DIN radio and was able to print out a mounting bracket for installation.

very cheap if you're talking about just a run-of-the-mill 3D printer.
metal sintering machines (which imo are much cooler and a real application of 3D printing) run a few hundred bucks per kilogram which can add up for even medium sized parts

3D printing went through the hype cycle.

I would say we would through the trough of disillusionment around the same time that Makerbot folded. We had been hyping the tech for years now up until that point, claiming that every house would have a 3D printer and soon we'd never buy shit from a factory ever again. Then reality hit.

I think now we've hit the plateau for consumer tech for now. You can buy a consumer 3D printer for cheap that can print really high resolution models. That's as good as we're gonna get for a while. Industry is going to keep improving for a while yet though.

For general consumers, plastic 3D printing werks fine.

Metal 3D printing (not cnc) works, but its not for general consumers since the cost is much more prohibitive.

How so? I could make some patterns and cast firearms parts. Plus, the lack of 3d printers never stopped people from making firearms. Not even ammunition should stop people, since you can make a light gas rifle (spudgun that fires lead).

Additive and subtractive manufacturing are not buzzwords. They've long been used in manufacturing and engineering circles. There are many more additive techniques than 3d printing.
