Is there any way to make decent money and still contribute novel research?
It seems like all the roles with decent pay are managerial or marketing.

In lieu of a payraise because there's a wage freeze I have the option of doing flexitime and going back to uni to complete a PhD. How can I use this opportunity to not just end up even more locked into a career of low income potential?
