How do you remember everything?
I'm unable to just read a book and remember everything without Anki and spaced repetition.
How people that read hundreds of books a year can remember the information contained in them?

it really depends on the type of book you are reading. what happens to me is that i read it, and i cant recall it on my own, but when the information i read in it has to be used (ie a test question) it comes back on its own. It kinda integrates itself into my mind, but i cant just invoke it whenever because I dont know that i know it.

That's physically impossible unless you spend 24/7 reading. Most people that "read' hundreds of books per year just skim through them for references and can't actually recall the contents.
If you want to ingrain book's contents into your memory, make a habit of writing sort of essays or reviews that highlight the most memorable points made in author's work. Obviously this regards only non-technical books, like fiction or non-fiction.

According to Musk’s brother, Elon used to read 2 books when he was like 5 yo. Spend 10 hours a day reading. He’s an outlier though. I think bill gates rn reads 1 book per week

I read a lot of stuff related to research that I do. The type of research is probably not important.

Forgetting is inevitable. When you read something, know what you are going to do with the information. Sometimes you will read something, forget about it, and then have to read it again. That's fine. If this happens enough, eventually you'll memorize it.

For school, flash cards might make sense. I am only saying that I have never saw a reason to use them for the stuff I do. One time I saw an anon on sci rewrite an entire machine learning paper by hand in order to memorize it. Don't do that to yourself.

I'd say you're probably wasting your time if you bother to write an essay that is actually comprehensible.

notes are fine though. I write a shit ton of notes even though I accept that I almost surely will never use them. I either use a notebook or a text file on my computer.

I tryed reading books once, i find it to be a really inefficient knowledge source, as the author will most of the time ramble about stupid shit you don't care about or masturbate his ego by making overly complex paragraphs.

And i'm talking about scientific/philosophy books. most of them could be compressed into 10 pages of valuable facts/knowledge. nobody is going to buy a 10 page book so they have to fill it up with crap to make it look consistent.

i'm not even talking about, biographies, romance, scifi,.... those are a pure waste of time

Wikipedia, NHLBI if i want really detailed studies and sometimes Reddit if i want to stay informed of the current breakthrough, mainly r/scince and r/logevity

an essay is mostly a waste of time if you're just looking for info retention. as other anon said, notes are perfect for that - at least for me, the muscle memory of writing it combined with having to understand the info the summarize it in a bullet point or two helps a lot with remembering

Remembering everything in the books is unimportant. Very few books have something so profound in every sentence. Read the book not to get anything out of it more that what you do just by reading it. Some things strike me and I remember them. Some things provoke thought. Many things arent worth holding on to. Memorizing books is not intelligence, original and creative thought is.

i think the only real way to remember shit from books is to do what they say. you know the shitty quote
I hear and I forget.
I see and I remember.
I do and I understand.
if you read a bunch of books you will understand general ideas but detail will smooth over you need to actually do the things in the books. do the calculations, build the circuit, write the program, etc. thats the only way. there is no special reading method that will get around this.
