>>11896924It takes a mature and sophisticated understanding of what is knowable and what is useful to appreciate that science cannot solve all of the mysteries of life.
Evolutionary theory/functional psychology is actually a good angle to take though. Religious feelings are a real phenomenon that can be seen on a PET scan and localized to specific areas of the brain. They served a strong evolutionary purpose to the degree that we developed and conserved the structures that play a role in them. Knowing that we have an innate ability and desire for religiosity tells us that we can find utility in religious thinking, especially when coming to grips with things that science cannot answer. Death, love, culture are all unavoidable aspects of human life that science has not found answers to. Given that some things are unknowable, we can actually lead better lives by having faith in religious structures that seek to provide that meaning we seek.
The philosophy of science and the established religions have failed modern man by not making this conundrum clear. We can choose to believe what allows us the maximum amount of moral direction and peace, especially if that belief avoids interfering with matters of technological progress except for where progress leads us to immoral and inhuman actions.
