Is it real that people are categorized into socially-determined categories called "races" which are fluid and are adapted to fit cultural power hierarchies? Yes. Are those social categories real? Certainly, they have a very real affect on the world. Are they biologically founded? Perhaps loosely on a surface level, but certainly not when you consider the historical racial boundaries and the current groupings.
Ethnicity is probably your best bet if you want a scientific understanding of people's backgrounds. Race is far too coarse.
