Quick question about the equivalence principle. It is said that we cannot distinguish between the accelerating reference frame and a gravity field. We notice that light bends in the accelerating elevator, hence it must also bend in the gravity field. But why can't I interpret this as an experiment that distinguishes the two? Is that what is meant by 'principle'? That I am not to just assume that it's true, and develop field equations from there?
