There's talks of building a Maglev System for the D.C, Baltimore, NYC area. Those Amtrak lines are a mess, and they're not built in a way that will allow faster service. Hyperloop is actually not bad for short distance, so it could be used for inter-city travel, that would totally be a good use of hyperloop. I could see a future where people hop onto the hyperloop to travel up <= 200 mile distances. I feel that it would get prohibitively expensive to build and maintain one above that range. Some good examples would be Boston to New York, New York to Washington DC. With such a system you could probably get from Boston to DC in less than an hour. But for longer track lengths, just go with Shinkansen type, or maglev.
