Genetic Engineering

What should I study now to be involved in genetic engineering in the future when it becomes more possible?

I envision it being similar to how Jamie Metzl describes it in this Joe Rogan podcast:

Basically you create 1000 of your own offspring in vitro, genetically scan them all, and choose the most genetically fit one.

My background is in physics with some experience in ML. Should I continue on the data science/ML path, and try to find biology-related projects to work on? Should I try and learn bioinformatics? Pure biology? What's my best path forward?

Also, any good bioinformatics textbooks/beginner projects?
