>>11889317Someone misled you and they're an idiot. Paleontology is absolutely vital to all forms of geology. I don't know if you know this yet but absolute age dating is nearly impossible on rock. Sure, yes, we are developing new techniques all the time but they're nowhere near perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Unless some magic happens we will be using relative age dating for the foreseeable future which is almost entirely paleontology dependent. Since the planet earth isn't a glass sphere seeing underground requires putting the pieces together using any available information at hand. So good luck drilling for oil without a paleontologist to consult. One of my classmates finished with a degree in paleontology and went on as a consultant for a mining company in Utah because they use index fossils to determine where coal is found. There are jobs all over the world for a good paleontologist.
You talked to the wrong person.
