Which are the best programming languages to learn as a engineering student? I had classes of Python and C, and learned MATLAB/Octave and LaTeX as side. I was thinking about studying Ada (beacause confiability and government/army contracts). What do you guys think?

matlab because the boomers use it
java because you're very likely to try and transition to software development early on in your career
c++ and rust when you are ready to join me in my grand design

verilog and vhdl aren't really programming languages but if you're EE or CE you'll need them, but they're completely different from the rest

OP here. I had no classes in specific languages. I learned Python because Numerical Calculus required it, and learned C because I took a Mechatronic emphasys (Programming II, of 4)

I never got this learning a language meme. As long as you can understand basic programming logic then learning any language is rather trivial. I learned Java first in an intro CS class and later C/C+ in an computer architecture class and picking up python/matlab for my physics major was simple at this point. I was also a bio major so I did R too.
Basically what I'm getting at is that employers and academia put too much emphasis on "languages you know" and not "do you know basic programming logic".

Stay the hell away from Matlab. They're trying to trap you in their environment.
I'd say Python + C++ (not C) is the perfect combination. Offload difficult work into C++ modules if you can't use libraries that already exist and enjoy all the cool flexible features of Python to have fun actually writing your program.
If you need to work with Matlab code, use octave wherever possible. Fuck those Matlab leeches.

Wrong. Every language has its intricacies you need to know about. Granted, you mostly don't need full courses on it, but the difference is there and arguing it away is CS-tard cope.

I only know C and Assembler but I see it similarly - the most important skill is being able to find a solution to a problem. The more elegant the better you are.
The language albeit important is just a tool allowing some sophistication in regards to implementation. Having said that I prefer "close to the machine" languages.

Are your C++ skills more in depth? I kinda wonder what the right way to code in C++ is - is Stroustrup's work The defacto approach for correct language use?

nah what I'm getting at is OP wants to know what languages are marketable but at the end of the day if you know one language it's highly likely you can learn another language in a shorttime frame, but HR always want to see Python or w/e specific languages/software the company uses on the resume.
