An even number is any integer that can be written as 2n, where n is an integer. 2(0)=0 so 0 is even. Also, by parity, since -1 is odd then 0 has to be even, or because 1 is odd 0 is even.

It could have been anything we wanted it to be and it just so happens that zero matches the definition
