What does space really look like, without all the photo enhancement and weird tricks?

If you were floating out there what would you see around you

If you where floating above the milky way for example and you had the whole galaxy in your field of view it would sadly just appear grayish to you.

I should also add that if you were inside a H2 region such as the Orion Nebula the whole night sky around you would be engulfed in a reddish hue.

I'll change that a bit. I believe that you would be able to perceive some colour in the bright core of the galaxy but the rest would be too dim for the eye to see any.

Haven't you guys ever been outside on a cloudless, moonless night in a rural area before? If you can see that massive amount of bright stars through the atmosphere, surely you can see even more when you're in space.

No, your analysis is correct. People completely underestimate distances when it comes to space. The magellanic clouds are near and they're already faint. The andromeda galaxy is roughly 2 million years away, a quite big galaxy actually, and except for its center, hardly possible to see. You could see the milky way from 100 thousand light years away and you could even recognize its features but it's nowhere as bright as often assumed.

I remember taking some friends up to a lake house in northern Minnesota and both of them had never been in a true night sky and they both refused to believe me that was the milky way.
King of jelly of southern hemispherefags because they get the magelanic clouds.
Its not a false image hubble photo explosion of color but its got plenty of variation. Orange-reddish cream glow inside a blue-grey milkyness.
I highly reccomend if anyone gets the chance to fuck off to the desert once in their life to take it. Its awe inspiring.
