There was a board physician, but he didn't have to do anything besides sedating people who suffered from sea sickness.
Apparently the year before someone had to get his appendix removed, but they were close enough to the coast and got the guy via helicopter.
I'm afraid they'll only take special doctors, but you can apply at the ministry of environmental affairs or whatever it's called, which organizes these trips for South Africa. Argentina is also an option, maybe their ministry of environmental affairs organizes these trips as well.
