>>11876631none of this matters because the fundamental unit of selection is the gene and ultimately its all just physics. you can completely ignore the idea of living and non-living matter. active matter is poorly defined but at least is more useful. this would include transposable elements, prions, viruses and what we typically think of as organisms all of which are animate/active in a way that most other things are not
