A technique for plotting stuff

It is a halfbaked Idea in my head, but I think it is a technique that I never see used anywere but could be interesting.

Lets say many entities move up and down a scale. By plotting out where entities move to we can plot out "walls" "uphill" and "downhill". The goal is to identify where entities are accelerated or deaccelareted and where the entity must make a "leap" Ie can not incrementally move forward. If the scale is something to be assumed as a good thing these resistances are interesting to see where this is encountered. Im most interested in the moments where you would say that you have come closer to your desired end of the scale because you got higher or lower, you are actually worse off then from a inverse position on the scale.

I know I am being quite vague right know, and i am probably overlooking a technique for this that already exists, but if it doesnt, I think this could be an interesting way to analyze things. Some applications could be societal mobility plotting for groups, or interorganization mobility etc.
