we used Organic Chemistry by David Klein, Organic Chemistry by Paula Yurkis, Physical Chemistry by Peter Atkins, Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry by Skoog.
I don't know about more general chemistry books tho, i'm studying genetics.

For Organic Chemistry "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" by Klein is probably the best. Can't speak for general chemistry or any other subfield.
