What is the sqrt(-1)? Why hasn't it been defined yet?

Any mathematics => calculus is reliant on an entire set of numbers that we don't have a basic understanding of. Am I missing something?

Read a book. The imaginary unit is rigorously identified by a quotient by ideal (x^2 + 1), which corresponds exactly to sqrt{-1} in the complex numbers

I think my question is worded badly. Why do teachers and books treat introducing this number, "i" like it's some mystical beast that isn't understood, when we have a deep understanding of its properties? Why do calculators produce a "math error" when we input sqrt(-1), when we could just treat i as another number?

The complex numbers didn't stem from solving quadratic equations but from cubic ones. This is because complex numbers are needed to find the real valued solutions too, for some cases.

let's assume I'm not in high school and I'm someone with a masters in computer engineering. Why do my professors with phds act like this is too complicated to treat like everything else. Their answers are always along the lines of "because it is an extremely complex idea, that's why they're called complex numbers."

Sorry, a + bi is not complicated, why does the science community treat it like it is?

There are many equivalent true definitions
One of them is pairs of numbers
a+bi= (a,b) with multiplication (a,b)(c,d)=(ac-bd, ac+bd) and addition (a,b)+(c,d) = (a+c, b+d)

Remember how they taught you "minus times minus is plus"? That means that you can never multiply the same number together to get a negative number. Because the answer normally is undefined, they just decided the say that the answer is i, thus creating complex numbers
