Since nT is the same org as 1T it would be easier to rule out their own systematics. Theoretically LZ could solve this issue as well, but I don't know as much about it.

Because the sigma result was so small it's not even close to being declared as proof. The most obviously explanation iirc was that a tiny amount of radon got into the detector and would give the same graph. The detector is so sensitive even a non-measurable amount of contamination would screw up the results.

well anon, if you were the funding agency, would you say “shut it down” or would you approve a grant request for hiring a couple new postdocs to nail it down?

honestly i think it is bullshit and the paper is written in a deceptively over-hypey way, but heck, if it is axions then that’s a major major thing so i think it is worth it to throw a couple postdoc salaries at it. provided they don’t siphon money off from my field. they can fuck themselves if they want to make my job market more competitive

Agreed, it was an exaggerated statement, but it's a truism in the majority of papers I find. Submissions will always try to fit papers and claims to the latest hot topic to ensure relevancy and their funding.

is that a bad thing though? honestly “gibs money since we need to follow up on axions” to me sounds a lot better than “gibs money because we need to keep verifying the Standard Model even more” or “gibs money because String Theory has provided new speculative avenues in which to mathematically probe the mathematics of mathematical aspects of mathematical gauge-gravity duality”

i don’t rhink SUSY is a big motivator any more. aside from a few boomers the experimentalists pushing for the FCC have moved to greener pastures. and axions would probably be a great boon for them. even in theory i think they are trying to broaden their horizons , which is good

in the most high-tech string theory models, yes. and it is a fairly general theorem that shows that heterotic string theory needs SUSY to accommodate fermions. but non-supersymmetric string theory is a thing and interest in it does exist even in the super elite groups. the “theorem” is not solid enough to rule non-superstmmetric string theory out because all “theorems” in string theory are actually not theorems at all, it’s all not well-understood enough to rule anything out

basically yes, but two caveats: one, nothing is really for certain, and two, SUSY breaking is not necessarily at low energies in string theory—it could easily be there but at too high energies for the LHC to possibly see
