By all accounts scientific research productivity peaked after world war 2 right as the global population and economy exploded in size, theoretical physics hit its insurmountable brick wall, mathematics fully degenerated into effete autism and computing became a topic of academic study. None of this has anything to do with Sherlock Holmes or public perception. The public has very little say over what is funded at these research institutions. Much more likely, corporate R&D expands and brain drains academia, also institutes incentives to generate shit research and to cut corners, huge swathes of working class kids shuffled through uni classes as corporate culture demands undergrad education to work jobs that don’t require it, our elites become cynical, underachieving, venal faggots disinterested in the titanic visions of their predecessors, literal hard limits on rate of growth of knowledge set in.
