Where can I learn about production systems, manufacturing and industrial automation?

I am a software developer but I have always been fascinated with the automation and robotics in modern factories.

It's usually something you get to learn on-site and with hands-on experience. It's mostly about browsing components and looking at stuff such as torque and shit and which machine being fit for the job by looking at what previous system engineers have been documenting. And even then, you'd only be doing a small part of it inside of a bigger team.

Unironically they had these programmable lego robots a while back. Legit buy one, start off by assembling it and then screwing around with it. Good for people under 18.
Next up, a classic project in this domain is a rubiks cube solver. You build out the arms to solve(by sourcing stuff on alibab or wherever), attach a camera and then code like an arduino/raspberry to do the logic.
That‘s basically the sort of stuff you can get outside of the industry. You need to be comfortable with embedded software, programming motion sensors/cameras etc. i unfortunately don‘t have a good coursera course or something for that, since it is very hands on.
Another interesting project is building a very basic 3d printer by hand(My buddy built one in about 3 months with no prior knowledge and got hired into a company that manufactures said robots based off that)

Google IEC 61131-3 compliant structured text, very similar to C, learn the basics of electronics, learn the basics of variable frequency drives and three phase motors. Learn about PLCs but most importantly learn about the specific Place your company likes to use.

those big arms just do a preprogrammed motion, which is just inverse kinematic and path planning.
this seems like a decent resource on that, scroll down to lecture pdf links http://www8.tfe.umu.se/courses/elektro/RobotControl/ or google "robot arm motion planning" or something similar to that.

Focus on DSP and control systems programming, as well as embedded programming, and study mechanical principles from a textbook.

Also learn how to use CAD/M, you won't regret it.
