when i put ice cubes in a glass of water, does the water warm up the ice or do the ice cubes cool down the water? or is it both at the same time?

It's an endothermic chemical reaction. Ice is being dissolved in water, but this process absorbs energy from the outside. That's why the glass becomes cooler even though it is not directly involved in what's happening between water and ice.

Actually everybody in this thread is completely wrong.

This is important: The ice and water are at the same temperature.

This is because of the latent heat. The outside environment warms up the entire cup, the water and the ice, and then the ice melts so that the system stays in equilibrium. But the temperature stays the same.
