if you want to do it, then do it. It's maybe a little late if you're thinking of going to postdoc and academia, but if you're going to stop with a PhD then I don't see why not.

Was thinking about getting a PhD and then going to do research at one of the national labs.

I'm not sure. I would think as long as your PhD is from a strong university then you could get a national lab job. But I don't think professorship would be a good route.

Keep in mind national lab jobs don't pay that much and there's hardly any upward mobility. But if you like the work then go for it.

That isn't what I asked.
Also your metrics don't have any meaning if you aren't giving counter-examples.
Like of course it's easy for a 15 year old kid to claim that a $100K salary is mediocre but I don't see many people realistically exceeding much more than that.

Not him but being relative to cost of living is the most important thing; I can clear 200k in Boston (realistically I'm not burning a hole in my stomach with those jobs) but the city itself is expensive as shit
