>>11868811Statisticians are no more mathematicians than physicists, engineers, chemists, computer scientists, or anyone else who uses mathematics in an entirely different field. Using the results of mathematics does not make you a mathematician, anymore than studying, researching, and using mathematics directly makes you a member of any of the fields which use the results of mathematics.
I don't know why non-mathematicians are so desperate to claim they are real mathematicians. If you wanted a mathematician to take you seriously, you should know that mathematicians don't take anyone serious but themselves and a handful of historical scholars they respect by virtue of being able to claim some superiority over other mathematicians based on who they respect.
As a mathematician, I feel like having a mathematician recognize you is a bit like having an uncle kiss you on the mouth - someone will try to justify why it's a good thing, but everyone instinctively understands that it's fucking gross.
>>11869520>every field of science makes use, daily, of virtually every field of theoretical mathematics>entire branches of research in non-math fields only exist because of theoretical mathematics>abstract, theoretical math is used literally every single day on the cutting edge of research>dumb-dumbs still say it isnt useful because no one is making consumer-grade bullshit with it"ITS NOT USEFUL ITS NOT USEFUL ITS NOT USEFUL!!!!", says the ego-filled pseud who is antagonized by the fact he knows he's the smartest person in the room until a mathematician walks in.
