Why are they the only source of Limulus amebocyte lysate? Can't we just reverse engineer some cell cultures to produce that shit in bioreactors? And aren't there synthetic chemicals that could detect LPS without the need of LAL?

it's not as simple as "throw it in yeast and harvest it." you have to make sure the protein folds correctly, that you can produce it at scale cheaply, that producing it at scale doesn't kill whatever you're growing it in, that the protein is still enzymatically active when you harvest it, that you can harvest it and store it without losing that activity, that you can transport it without same, all kinds of shit. it's a massive engineering problem at that point, not a biotech one.

the other important factor for comparisons is other enzyme costs. i think a good comparison point might be restriction enzymes. the problem though is that they're sold in "units", which are define as "enough enzyme to cut 1 ug of DNA in an hour", and the conversion from protein content to Units is different for each enzyme and buffer system

Not sure about blue, but there is a particular skink in Papua New Guinea with green blood.
Turns out its coloration is due to high levels of Biliverdin (the waste product of hemoglobin decay) in its blood.
Current hypothesis is that those high levels help the lizard kill any would-be parasites
