They already eat plastic and have been shown to turn it into a form of alcohol. The issue is that it's a relatively slow process. They ran an experiment and found that it took 100 worms around 5 days to eat a plastic bag. I believe they still have to find the limiting factor, the root of the cause. Once that's identified, scientists could begin altering their genes using crispr. Perhaps we could make them slightly bigger and change their genetic code to make them more voracious. We maybe could find a way to also make them breed faster.
The next problem would be to make sure these new genes don't completely override the old ones and that their population doesn't explode outside controlled settings. It would really suck if all the plastic that we use in our daily lives starts being eaten by these creatures.
