I understand this may be a stupid question, but I haven’t seen it considered.

If an RNA virus suddenly starts to infect many more people than it had previously, and as a consequence generate exponentially more replications of itself, doesn’t that significantly raise the risk of a more virulent mutation of the virus emerging?
