Yes, but it takes years and years of study and meditation and is virtually unattainable while leading a life in the modern world, and certainly incompatible with spending 8-10 years studying STEM subjects in higher education.

The use of psychedelics drastically decreases the amount of study and meditation needed to achieve this goal and makes it accessible for those pursuing the study of science and a life in modern society.

This should not be confused with the impression of psychedelics making you know oneself; they are, in effect, a catalyst that can greatly speed up the process of knowing oneself and reduce the threshold energy level needed. One must walk the path oneself, it still takes years of study, learning, and meditation, but it can be achieved while still participating in modern society, completing formal education and gaining employment.

The ascetic path of achieving knowledge of self without the aid of psychedelic substances requires complete devotion.

Pretty based. I might add to it that one finds themselves by seeing different points of view, and then centering back on your view. You can acknowledge the differences and how you fit with them. Drugs are a hard physical/chemical perception change forcing you along that path, speeding the process.
