Climate change, if no mitigations are taken in the next few decades, will cause major problems and loss of life. You don't need "doom" in order to be seriously concerned about something.

The ones that have hit the Earth before have mostly not been total extinction events, though some scientists believe there actually have been a few and that life was almost totally snuffed out on some occasions.
There are tons of risks facing humanity as a species. Climate change is one, but it happens to be the one we can actually directly impact. We have a many-year "heads up". It's a lot harder to prevent a massive asteroid or gamma-ray burst.
