I'm trying to read "The Selfish Gene" start to finish before this Sunday, when I'll be giving it to my mom as a birthday gift. That way we can talk about the book together. What are we in for? Is it a good read?

A good follow up to this book is Graham Bell's, Selection: the Mechanism of Evolution, and then a more general primer text like The Princeton guide to Evolution. I think that you'll enjoy both texts quite a lot. If you want something very in-depth you should read Theoretical Evolutionary Genetics by Felsenstein or Elements of Evolutionary Genetics by Charlesworth and Charlesworth. Enjoy!

it's the most influential science book of the second half of the 20th century.
it's also well written. dawkins is actually a very good writer.
so yes, it's a good read.
once you have read it, you will want to dig into the topic more deeply.

great ideas and perspective, but rather tedious and long-winded in parts. Long long descriptions of bird experiments. Might appeal more to those actually studying biology. He's rather defensive and whiny about criticism of previous editions.
I liked his "greatest show on earth" better.
