Because
1/ you could help humanity do good thing with genetic engineering
2/ even if the idea is cool, making catgirl would serve no purpose
3/ the state of the art tech allow to edit some gene, but "fusing" two quite differrent creature is like, inconceivable.

There is nothing wrong with it. Simply reproducing incurs all the risks of doing genetic engineering on humans since there is a high risk of producing a physically or mentally crippled child who will be unhappy through their entire life. However, genetic engineering allows for incremental refinement such that defects become rare, and movement towards more capable intelligent organisms is possible. We are severely stunting ourselves by not pursuing it seriously.
