nobody cares about a PhD if the job doesn't require one

your experience is irrelevant if they're only hiring PhD's

if the job doesn't require a PhD in the first place then obviously the experience is more valuable

Well, if you’re doing literally nothing but working on your thesis for 5 years then yeah employers are gonna prefer the guy with more experience.

But, if you’re spending your time in school wisely and you have at least 1 or two grad level internships and a couple publications by the time you graduate you have the opportunity to have a much stronger record for employers.
Alternatively if you’re not totally dicking around a PhD will generally result in higher pay long term than a BS+3-4 years experience.

I'm a physics PhD and an F-1 student so internships aren't really a feasible option for me. But I'll be doing an actuarial minor. Hopefully that can be an advantage.

Too broad of a question. This heavily depends on your field of study and industry of practice.

In general if you intend on doing research or serious r+d then a PhD would be better suited.

Otherwise a BS + MS Part time.

Most employers have no ideas what a PhD can provide. I did a PhD and later I had a sideline in quality assurance auditing. Applying what I had learned as a scientist I made many more findings each month than any of my colleagues. People saw the results but never accepted that scientific training, rigour or analysis had anything to do with it. Most seemed to think "luck" explained it all.

the further I go into academia, the more skeptical and pessimistic I am about becoming a tenured researcher. I don't want to bother. I'd rather go straight to industry after I graduate. Postdoc is more of a last-resort option for me.

I also did a PhD in Physics and afterwards I did a post doc fellowship in Japan, at the Electrotechnical Laboratory. It was not too academic with a nice industrial aspect and going to Japan for 2 years was great. I can recommend it.

Later I ended up in industry.

Sounds awesome. Was it hard to get in?
I'm a theorist, so more engineering-type jobs are not really my cup of tea. I'd rather do programming or finance.

Most often, you should only be doing a PhD if you have an intense in doing research in a specific field or you have a specific career path in mind that requires a PhD. Other than that, experience is better.
